エデンの東（３０）

．When June came the grasses headed out and turned brown,
．and the hills turned a brown which was not brown but a gold
．and saffron and red —— an indescribable color. And from
．then on until the next rains the earth dried and the streams
．stopped.

６月になると、草原の草が伸びて茶褐色になった。金色、サフラ
ン色、そして赤色だった丘は茶褐色になった。——それは筆舌に
尽くせない色になった。 その時からずっと次の雨期になるまで、
大地は乾燥し、水流も止まってしまうのだった。
