I  was  born in the year  1632,  in the city of York,  of a good family,  tho'  not
of  that  country,  my father  being a foreigner of  Bremen,  who  settled  first
at  Hull :   He  got  a good estate  by  merchandise,  and leaving off  his trade,
lived  afterward  at York,  from  whence  he had  married  my mother,  whose
relations  were  named  Robinson,  a very  good  family  in  that  country,  and
from  whom  I was  call'd  Robinson  Kreutznaer,  but  by  the usual corruption
of  words  in England,  we  are  now call'd,  nay we call  our selves,  and write
our name  Crusoe,  and  so  my companions  always call'd me.

 私は１６３２年、ヨーク市で生まれた。土地の者でななかったが、家柄は
よかった。　父は外国人でブレーメン*出身でした。初めはハルに定住した：
商業を営んで、そこそこの財産を得ました。そして、事業はやめて、
後にヨーク* 市に移り住んだ。　そこで結婚したのが私の母だった。母方の
親戚はロビンソン姓だった。その州のきわめてよい家柄だった。その姓を
もらって、私はロビンソン・クロイツェルと名付けられた。しかし英国風の
音声脱落により、そう呼ばずに、そして、読みだけでなく綴りもクルーソー
となりました。私の周囲もみんな、そう呼びました。
