Pictures of huge Christmas trees and happy children's faces
continued to busy my mind.   There was one picture, especially,
which I could not shake off, try as I would :

   When I was about to leave the house for Midnight Mass,
the Captain had come out of his room and, taking my hand in
both of his, had said:  

   " I always feared Christmas more than any other day.
    But this year you have made it very beautiful for us.
    Thank you. "

大きなクリスマスツリーと幸せそうな子供たちの顔が、
私の心に残像が忙しく切り替わりあれこれと映り続けて
いました。  残像の中で、特に大きい１枚が、いくら振り
落とそうとしても、心から離れない１枚の残像がありました；

　　私が深夜ミサ参列のため、館を出ようとしたとき、
大佐が自分の部屋から出てきて言ったのです：

　　　「私はね、いつもクリスマスの日が怖かったのです。
　　　　他のどんな日よりも。でも今年は違った。私たちに
　　　　とって、とても美しい日にしていただいた。
　　　　ありがとう。」

There was a warm light in the fine dark eyes which, for the first
time since I had known him, did not look pained and restless.
That had made me very happy,  but now the picture kept coming
back and disturbing me in my prayer.

                      訳
大佐の黒い瞳を出会って以来、初めて見つめたのですが、
その中には、暖かい光がありました。目には苦悩の気配
も不安の感じも見受けられませんでした。そのことが私
にはとてもハッピーな気分にしてくれました。さてこの今
心に描いた絵は、再び戻ってきて、私の祈りをかき乱して
おります。

Turning to the Holy Child, I said fervently:  

    " I thank You so much for sending me there.
     Please help me to draw them all  closer to You.."

                      訳
御子の話に転じます。私は熱心に言葉を捧げました。

　　「主よ、私をここにお使わし下さったことに
　　　感謝いたします。どうか、彼らを御身前に
　　　導くお力添えを給わんことを。」
