After the last carol, still sitting around the table, we started to
write our Christmas letters.  After a short throught I wrote
down :

  " Dear Christ Child :  It would make my life so much
    easier if You would bringeach child here in the house
    a pair of nailed boots, a Wetterfleck, and a pair of
    wool mittens.   I myself do not need anything, as
    I shall go b ack to Nonnberg soon anyway. "

最後の聖歌を歌い終わっても、まだ私たちはテーブルの
周りに座り続け、クリスマス・レターを書き留めました。
しばらく考えて、私はこう書きました。

　　「敬愛なる御子キリスト様：　当家の子らにスパイク・
　　　ブーツをお与えください。それと毛糸のミトンをお与え
　　　ください。そのためなら、私はもっと簡素な暮らしで結構
　　　でございます。私に関しましては、間もなくノンベルクに
　　　帰る身の上なれば、必要なものはございません。」

The excitement of the first Sunday in Advent had hardly died down
when the sixth of December came around, one of the most momentious
days for all houses where children lived .  On the vigil of this day
Saint Nikolaus comes down to earth to visit all the little ones.

待降節第一日曜日の興奮はなかなか冷めやらず、子どもたちの
いる家庭で重要な日のひとつ、１２月６日が巡って来ました。
この前夜の祈祷の日、聖ニコラウスは地上へ降り立ち、全ての
子どもたちを訪ねます。

Saint Nikolaus was a saintly bishop of the fourth century, and as he
was always very kind and helpful to children and young people, so
God granted that every year on his feast-day he might come down
to the children.

聖ニコウラウスは４世紀の崇高な司教で、子どもたちや、若人に
は常に優しく、救いの手をさしのべたのでした。そこで神は
毎年、彼の祝日に彼が子供たちのところへ下りていくことを
お許しになりました。
