ＰＡＲＴ　ＯＮＥ：　ＡＵＳＴＲＩＡ

Someone tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up from
the exercise books of my young pupils, which I was just correcting,
into the lined, kindly face of a little lay sister.

　第１部：　オーストリア　

　　　　訳
誰かが私の背中をポンとたたきました。見上げると、そこには
修道女の年老いてはいたが、優しい顔がありました。
私は生徒たちの練習帳の添削をしてたとことでした。
　  "Reverend Mother Abbess expects you in her private parlour."
she whispered.

　　　　訳
 「修道院長があなたをお呼びです。院長応接室でお待ちです。」

と彼女はささやき声で言いました。

  I looked up from the exercise books of my young pupils,
  which I was just correcting,
  into the lined, kindly face of a little lay sister.

  "Reverend Mother Abbess expects you
   in her private parlour ," she whispered.

　私は、生徒たちのドリルを、添削中でしたが、
　そこから　（目を離し）見上げて、　
　ひとりの修道女の、しわの寄った、
　でも、やさしい顔を、覗き込みました。

「修道院長が執務室であなたを、お呼びですよ。」

彼女はささやき声で言いました。

  Before I could close my mouth, which had opened in astonishment,
  the door shut behind the small figure.
 
  Lay sisters were not supposed to converse with candidates
  for the  novitate.
 驚きのあまり、ポカンと開いた口は、この修道女がドアを閉めて
出て行くまで閉じられなかった。

部屋では、靴を脱ぐことになっています。　　
I looked up from the exercise books of my young pupils, which I was
just correcting into the lined, kindly face of a little lay sister.
ここの looked up は「見上げる」の過去形、「見上げた」という意味。
何を見上げたかというと、ずっと先の into ～　face
（looed into ～　を覗き込んだ）　（looed up ～見上げる）
そして looked up と　looed into　が融合して　「見上げて～を覗き込んだ」
となります。
I could hardly believe my ears.
We candidates saw Reverend Mother Abbess
only from afar in choir.
We were the lowest of the low, living on the outskirts of the novitate,
wearing our black mantillas,
waiting with eager anticipation for our reception into the novitate.
私は耳を疑いました。私たち見習生は修道長に会えるのは、聖歌隊で歌っている
とき、遠くで見るだけですから.

見習生の序列は修道女候補生の中でも一番下だったのです。
黒のマンティーラをかぶってはいるが、
候補生に迎え入れられるのを、今か今かと待つ身分でした。
can hardly +　動詞 ＝　ほとんど～できない
動詞は believe で　can が過去ですから、「ほとんど信じられなかった」
何を？　ear 耳を。
私は、my ear 自分の耳をほとんど信じられなかった、つまり
私は自分の耳を疑った。

anticipation  は 期待して待つこと。eagar は 熱望しながら、ということで
eagar anticipation 期待熱望しながら待つ、ということです。
